Police Helicopter Crashes Bringing The Death Toll Of The Charlottesville “Unite The Right” Rally To Three

A few hours after the car crash Saturday, a police helicopter assisting public safety resources crashed into a wooded area near Charlottesville, VA.

State Police identified the dead troopers as Lt. Jay Cullen, 48, of Midlothian, Va. and Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates, 40, of Quinton, Va.

Cullen was a 23 year veteran of the force and leaves behind a wife and two sons. Bates was a three year veteran and leaves behind a wife, a son and a daughter.

According to reports, state police, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board continue to investigate the cause of the helicopter crash, though they say there is “no indication of foul play being a factor.”

Sunday morning Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe visited state troopers.
