The GOP’s Latest Attempt To Repeal The Affordable Healthcare Act Failed To Pass Senate Early Friday Morning

The GOP’s latest attempt to repeal the Affordable Healthcare Act, titled “Healthcare Freedom Act” failed to pass the senate with a vote of 49 – 51 as Senator John McCain and two other republicans voted no on the “skinny repeal.”

McCain, who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer, was flown in Wednesday to cast a vote to keep the bill alive before eventually delivering the death blow to the bill early Friday, leaving Mitch McConnell and fellow republicans stunned.

McCain later defended his opposition to bill via twitter.

He later called for politicians from both sides of the aisle to come together to improve the healthcare system.

The GOP’s latest bill was similar to the “skinny repeal” voted on earlier in the week.

The Healthcare Freedom Act would have removed the individual mandate in place due to the Affordable Care Act, would have delayed a tax on medical devices and would have removed the requirement for large employers to offer healthcare coverage to employees. The bill would have also cut off federal funds for Planned Parenthood for a year and increased federal grants to community health centers.

Since, President Trump has asked for his supporters to keep hope that a repeal and replace will take place.

For the time being, the Affordable Healthcare Act will remain. You can learn what that means for you here.
