Neil Gorsuch sworn in to Supreme Court

Following a year long vacancy after the death of Antonin Scalia, Neil Gorsuch was sworn in as a Supreme Court Judge. After the late Justice Scalia passed in February of 2016, Obama quickly nominated Merrick Garland for the vacancy but the congress blocked the nomination.

According to Politico, Gorsuch graduated from Columbia, Oxford and Harvard, where he was a classmate of former President Barrack Obama. Gorsuch is also said to hold somewhat conservative views, similar to Scalia, which should keep the bench similar to what it was before.

In order to pass the vote, Senate Republicans were forced to “go nuclear”, essentially changing the required votes for this nomination process and all nominations following from 60 votes to 51 votes.

Gorsuch is coming to table with a full plate as there are several cases that are tied, dead set at 4-4, that will see Gorsuch cast the deciding voting following a rehearing. In cases such as Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Inc v Pauley which consist of a preschool being denied federal aid for a playground because of their religious affiliation.  Fox news has better coverage of the case awaiting Gorsuch here.
